Molín de la Gargantiella added to Heritage Red List

The Molín de la Gargantiella, a historic house-mill located in Cangas de Onís, Spain, has been added to Hispania Nostra’s Red List of Heritage. This registry identifies historical and cultural assets that require urgent attention to ensure their conservation due to significant deterioration.

Built in 1787 by order of José Antonio Ruenes, secretary to the Duke of Alba, the structure served a dual purpose as both a milling facility and a residence for the miller and their family. Situated on the banks of the Güeña River, the building is constructed from stone with Covadonga limestone accents and sits on a one-hectare estate.

Although the building has remained inhabited until the Spanish Civil War, decades of abandonment have led to its current state of decay. While the structure maintains its integrity and holds the highest level of protection in the Principality of Asturias, it requires comprehensive interior rehabilitation. The current owner has reportedly begun the necessary procedures to undertake a restoration project that respects the building's structural integrity.
