Mombasa Archdiocese holds memorial for pilgrims killed in highway crash
A memorial service was held at St. Matthias Mulumba Catholic Church in Mikindani to honor parishioners killed in a road accident on the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway. The victims, including 14 women, two men, and their driver, were traveling from Mikindani to the Subukia National Marian Shrine in Nakuru for Kenya’s National Prayer Day.
The collision occurred along the Mlima Kiu-Salama stretch on October 3, 2026, when a truck reportedly lost control, involving multiple vehicles. While the parish mourned 17 members, reports indicate a total of 20 people died in the early morning accident.
Archbishop Dominic Kimengich led the service, describing the event as a heavy loss for the parish and offering spiritual comfort to the bereaved families. Following the Mass, families began transporting the deceased for separate burials across different parts of Kenya.
