Mon Police dismantle inter-state stolen vehicle network

The Mon Police Anti-Vehicle Theft Squad (AVTS) has dismantled an inter-state network involved in the theft, transportation, and disposal of stolen vehicles, primarily two-wheelers. The operation began after officers identified over 50 vehicles in Mon Town with suspicious or incomplete ownership documentation.

Investigations revealed that more than 30 of these vehicles were linked to theft cases in several districts of Assam, including Jorhat, Tinsukia, Charaideo, and Sivasagar, as well as Longding district in Arunachal Pradesh. Some of these theft cases had reportedly remained undetected for four to five years.

The investigation uncovered a modus operandi where vehicles stolen in Assam were smuggled into Nagaland and sold at low prices to unsuspecting villagers. Middlemen based in Nagaland allegedly facilitated these sales, sometimes providing buyers with random or unrelated identity documents to mask the theft. The recovered vehicles have been returned to their rightful owners or the relevant police authorities.
