MoN Takanawa museum wins awards for innovative manga performance
MoN Takanawa: The Museum of Narratives, a new cultural landmark in Tokyo's Takanawa Gateway City, is gaining recognition for its integration of traditional Japanese storytelling and modern technology. Designed by architect Kengo Kuma, the nine-story spiral structure is constructed from wood and glass, serving as a museum, performance hall, and educational venue.
The museum’s inaugural production, ‘MANGALOGUE: Phoenix’, has received multiple prestigious honors, including the Good Design Best 100 and the ACC Tokyo Creativity Awards’ highest category, the Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications Award.
‘MANGALOGUE’ introduces a new performing arts format that transforms manga—traditionally a solitary reading experience—into a collective live event. The production utilizes technology, such as robotic arms, to interact with live performers, blending manga aesthetics with theatrical elements. The project has already attracted 20,000 spectators.
