Mona Island shipwreck: 40 rescued and 2 dead after boat capsizes
A makeshift boat carrying an estimated 60 people capsized in the Mona Passage near Mona Island, west of Puerto Rico, on Sunday night. The U.S. Coast Guard reported that at least 40 people have been rescued, while two fatalities have been confirmed. Search operations are ongoing to locate several missing individuals.
Survivors reported that the vessel overturned following a violent altercation involving a machete, which left several passengers seriously injured. In the ensuing panic, many occupants jumped into the sea without life jackets. Some survivors spent more than 12 hours in the water before being spotted by the crew of the motor vessel Tripiti around midday on Monday.
The rescue operation involves multiple agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard, Puerto Rico Police, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the Dominican Republic Air Force. While the exact nationalities of those on board have not been fully confirmed, officials indicated that the majority of the passengers are believed to be migrants from the Dominican Republic, with at least two believed to be from Haiti.
