AS Monaco relegated to fifth tier of French basketball
The French Basketball Federation (FFBB) has officially rejected AS Monaco’s application to compete in Nationale 1, the third tier and final professional level of French basketball. Following a review by the Management Control Committee (CGC), officials determined that the club failed to provide sufficient documentation to prove the accuracy and stability of its financial situation.
As a result of this decision, the club—which was a 2025 EuroLeague finalist and the 2026 French champion—faces a massive relegation to Nationale 3, the fifth tier of the French basketball pyramid. This move effectively pushes the club into amateur status. The federation noted that granting an exception without solid financial guarantees would compromise the integrity and fairness of the competitions.
The club’s decline follows a turbulent period involving financial restructuring and failed attempts at acquisition, including discussions with former NBA player Jamal Musberry that did not result in a deal. The relegation also impacts the club’s roster, as strict transfer regulations in amateur leagues create uncertainty for high-profile players like Axel Toupane.
