Monaghan GAA club management payment debate intensifies
A debate regarding the rising costs of club management in the GAA has resurfaced following reports of significant payments to coaching staff in Monaghan. Dick Clerkin, a Monaghan GAA figure, noted on the Indo GAA podcast that an intermediate club in the county is reportedly paying €250 per night for coaching services. With sessions occurring three to four nights a week, this could total up to €1,000 weekly before additional match-day expenses are considered.
While covering reasonable expenses for volunteers is a long-standing practice within the GAA, Clerkin suggested these figures represent a shift toward substantial compensation that exceeds traditional expense reimbursement. He noted that such financial incentives are becoming a primary driver for coaches moving between different clubs and counties, as the high level of compensation can become difficult for individuals to walk away from once established.
