Monaldi Hospital inaugurates new heart transplant department

Monaldi Hospital in Naples has inaugurated a new specialized department dedicated to heart transplants and innovative adult cardiac surgery procedures. Directed by Claudio Marra, the facility is designed to centralize the entire patient care pathway, from transplant preparation to post-operative management.

The new unit features a dedicated operating room, a sub-intensive care area with six single rooms equipped for high-complexity monitoring, and an intensive care unit containing six beds plus two isolation beds for immunosuppressed or infectious patients.

Data released by the Azienda Ospedaliera dei Colli shows that Monaldi performed 16 heart transplants in the first nine months of 2026, with five occurring in the last month alone. Between 2024 and September 2026, the hospital completed 60 adult heart transplants. Additionally, the facility has performed 21 VAD and 24 Impella procedures during this period. Anna Iervolino, General Director of the Azienda Ospedaliera dei Colli, stated that the investment strengthens the hospital's role in high-complexity cardiac surgery and transplantation.
