Monarch butterflies begin migration into Mexico

Thousands of monarch butterflies have begun their annual migration from the United States into Mexico, heading toward hibernation and mating sanctuaries in the oyamel forests of Michoacán and the State of Mexico.

In the state of Coahuila, sightings have been reported in several municipalities, including Sabinas, Ciudad Acuña, and Piedras Negras. Environmental factors, specifically the arrival of Cold Front Number 2 and northern winds, have acted as aerodynamic triggers, accelerating the insects' southward journey.

Monitoring efforts by the Profauna Association’s Correo Real Program and the Project Monarch mobile application have documented numerous sightings. Some butterflies are equipped with BlūMorpho Bluetooth transmitters, which are tiny devices used to track their migratory routes. This seasonal arrival coincides with the upcoming Day of the Dead traditions in Mexican communities.
