Monarch butterfly migration reaches Texas as species heads to Mexico
Monarch butterflies undergo a massive multi-generational migration, traveling up to 3,000 miles from Canada and the United States to forested mountains in central Mexico. During this journey, the butterflies utilize the sun’s position and magnetic fields for navigation and enter a state of reproductive dormancy.
To observe this phenomenon, San Angelo State Park in Texas is hosting a free monarch migration event on Saturday, Oct. 10. The program includes a presentation and a guided hike to a monarch waystation at the Bell’s Trailhead. The event is part of the broader seasonal movement of the species toward their overwintering sites in Mexico.
