Monash University Develops High‑Recovery Lithium Extraction Method

Researchers at Monash University have created a new lithium‑extraction process that achieves about 95% recovery from salt mixtures while using far less freshwater and energy than conventional brine evaporation. The method solidifies brine, then employs common solvents such as ethanol and acetone to selectively dissolve lithium‑containing salts, leaving other salts behind. A solar‑powered evaporation system recovers more than 99% of the solvents, reducing waste and energy consumption. The team, led by Professor Huanting Wang, Dr. Zhikao Li and Ph.D. student Pan Liu, has filed a patent for the technology, highlighting its potential for cleaner, large‑scale lithium production.

Separately, Australian-listed lithium companies on the ASX have attracted strong investor interest, with the sector’s market value increasing more than 200% between 2020 and 2023. Australia provides roughly half of global lithium supplies, making its listed miners a key part of the battery supply chain. Industry analysts have identified the top ten ASX lithium stocks for exposure to the expanding battery market, noting their relevance to agriculture, forestry and mining operations that rely on lithium‑based energy storage and off‑grid power solutions.
