Monasterio de Las Huelgas: Medieval treasure in Burgos

Founded in 1187 by Alfonso VIII of Castile and Eleanor of Plantagenet, the Monasterio de Las Huelgas in Burgos served as both a Cistercian nunnery and a royal pantheon. The site was designed to function as a religious center directly linked to the monarchy and a symbol of dynastic power.

Historically, the monastery was a significant political and religious institution. A notable feature was the role of the abbess, who held authority over lands and cenobios, and possessed her own jurisdiction reporting directly to the Pope. This provided a rare level of recognized female power in medieval Europe.

The complex includes a cloister, royal tombs, and a museum of medieval textiles. It is managed by Patrimonio Nacional.
