Castelsardo and Mondello implement measures to end bathing bans

In Italy, local authorities in Castelsardo and Mondello have taken steps to resolve bathing bans caused by high bacterial levels in coastal waters.

In Castelsardo, Mayor Maria Lucia Tirotto announced the implementation of a pumping station and collection tank to intercept wastewater from the Rio Salvino before it reaches the sea. This technical intervention aims to prevent the sewage discharges that have frequently caused bacterial contamination at the Marina beach. While not a permanent fix, the system is intended to bypass the runoff into the sewage network to ensure the beach remains usable for residents and tourists.

In Mondello, Palermo, the municipal administration has revoked temporary bathing bans following new samples from the ASP showing that bacterial parameters have returned to legal limits. Public Health Assessor Fabrizio Ferrandelli stated that while the area near the Antico Stabilimento is now safe, a task force including the municipal police and sewage sector will continue to monitor the coast to identify any illegal discharges and ensure the stability of the sewage system.
