Mondelēz International replaces plastic cookie trays with paper

Mondelēz International is replacing rigid PET trays with FSC-certified paper trays for more than 115 cookie products across 25 European markets. This initiative covers eight brands: LU, Milka, Granola, Cadbury, Marabou, Chips Ahoy!, Lacta, and Freia.

The transition is expected to eliminate approximately 2,200 tonnes of virgin plastic annually, representing an 80% reduction in plastic compared to previous packaging. The program affects roughly 28,000 tonnes of cookies produced each year. Markets involved include the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, Poland, Spain, and the Nordic countries.

This move is part of a broader global strategy by Mondelēz International to reduce its use of virgin rigid plastic by 25% by 2030. The company noted that the transition required a complete redesign of packaging layers, including tray design and logistics.
