Mondovì, Italy, features historic funicular and Baroque landmarks
Mondovì, a city in the Piedmont region of Italy, is characterized by its dual structure consisting of the lower commercial district of Breo and the historic medieval center of Mondovì Piazza. The two levels are connected by a funicular that has been in operation since 1886, making it one of the oldest in Italy.
The upper town features significant historical and artistic landmarks, including the Palazzo di Città, which houses the Museum of Ceramics, and the Church of the Mission, known for its Baroque trompe l’oeil ceiling painted by Andrea Pozzo. Other notable sites include the San Donato Cathedral and various Baroque churches that reflect the city's historical importance in the Piedmontese Savoy region.
Mondovì also holds historical significance in the field of printing, having produced the first book printed in Piedmont in 1472.
