Monemvasia cable car project faces funding and planning issues
The Association of Greek Archaeologists (SEA) has raised serious concerns regarding the development of a planned cable car in the historic settlement of Monemvasia. According to the association, the project is currently at a standstill due to inadequate planning.
A decision by the Deputy Minister of Finance on September 11, 2026, has modified the scope of the project. The physical scope is now limited to the procurement of equipment, specifically the cable car cabins, despite the fact that the necessary infrastructure and facilities for their operation have not yet been constructed.
Furthermore, the project has been removed from the Recovery Fund, shifting the total cost of 5,018,394.46 euros to national resources. While the completion deadline has been extended to October 2026, the SEA claims this date is entirely unfeasible as on-site works have already ceased.
