Money 20/20 conference explores future of finance and tokenization
Industry leaders at the Money 20/20 conference in Las Vegas engaged in debates regarding the evolving landscape of financial services and the complexities of digital assets.
One session focused on the competition between credit unions, community banks, and fintech companies. Participants argued over the value of human relationships versus technological convenience. Maurice Smith, former CEO of Local Government FCU and Civic FCU, emphasized that community banks maintain a competitive edge through personalized human connection that algorithms cannot replicate. Kathryn Davis, CEO of Valley First Credit Union, suggested that credit unions aim to bridge the gap by combining relationship-driven service with fintech-style convenience.
A separate panel addressed the challenges of tokenization in payments, identity management, and asset management. Experts, including Stephen Richardson of Fireblocks, Debbie Gamble of Interac, and Elizabeth St. -Onge of TD Bank, noted that while various token formats solve specific problems, they often introduce new issues such as privacy concerns, subscription friction, and interoperability hurdles between different systems.
