MoneyGram launches MGUSD stablecoin on Stellar blockchain

MoneyGram has introduced MGUSD, a U.S. dollar‑backed stablecoin issued on the Stellar network. The token is minted and managed by Bridge, a Stripe‑owned regulated issuer, and stored in Fireblocks wallets that link to the MoneyGram app. MGUSD will be available in the U.S. market at launch, with plans to roll out globally across MoneyGram’s network of more than 350,000 retail locations in over 200 countries.

The stablecoin is intended to lower the cost of cross‑border remittances and provide a digital dollar‑denominated balance for customers who lack traditional banking. By combining blockchain settlement with MoneyGram’s physical presence, the company aims to serve underserved markets in Latin America, Africa and Southeast Asia, where remittance fees average over 6 %.

MoneyGram’s move follows a broader industry trend, with major payment firms such as Visa, Mastercard and PayPal experimenting with stablecoin solutions. The global stablecoin market topped $230 billion in 2025, and MGUSD adds an institution‑backed option that emphasizes regulatory compliance and rapid, low‑cost transactions.
