Mong Kok sanitation concerns prompt increased FEHD enforcement

The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) has increased inspections and enforcement in the Mong Kok and Sham Shui Po districts following reports of significant waste accumulation. In Mong Kok, specifically around Cheung Wang Road and the wet market area, large quantities of foam boxes and refuse have been observed, sometimes piling higher than pedestrians.

While some of these locations are not officially designated as current “sanitation black spots,” the FEHD has intensified surprise inspections and enforcement. Between August 2025 and July 2026, authorities conducted 297 enforcement actions in the Mong Kok area regarding illegal dumping and street obstruction. In Sham Shui Po, over 1,155 actions were taken during the same period.

To combat recurring issues, the FEHD is utilizing technology, including CCTV and artificial intelligence, to analyze footage and deploy precise enforcement. Local residents and lawmakers have suggested further measures, such as increasing fines, providing more recycling incentives through the “Green@Community” program, and increasing the frequency of waste collection to accommodate the limited space available to local merchants.
