Mongolia grassland fire triggers Japanese government aid response

The Japanese government has announced it will dispatch experts from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to Mongolia to assist with forest protection following a massive grassland fire. The blaze, which occurred in the Numrug Nature Reserve in eastern Mongolia, has reportedly destroyed approximately 470,000 hectares, covering about 80% of the protected area.

Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi stated that Japan intends to provide a package of support, including the provision of necessary equipment and cooperation in fire recovery, environmental restoration, and human resource development. The government will coordinate closely with Mongolian authorities based on reports from the dispatched experts.

Local Mongolian media reports suggest the fire originated from a vehicle carrying the Japanese president of Mobicom, a subsidiary of KDDI, which became entangled in grass and ignited. While some discussions have emerged regarding the specific circumstances of the incident, the Japanese government is focusing on humanitarian and environmental recovery efforts.
