Mongolia wildfire sparks dispute involving KDDI subsidiary
A massive wildfire in Mongolia’s Numuug Nature Reserve, which destroyed approximately 528,765 hectares—about 80% of the protected area—has led to tensions between Mongolian authorities and Japanese interests. The fire, which occurred on October 8, 2026, reportedly originated from a vehicle carrying executives from Mobicom, a local subsidiary of the Japanese telecommunications giant KDDI.
KDDI stated that seven employees, including CEO Yasuhiro Ochi, were in the area under the supervision of local authorities to attend a network opening ceremony. The company explained that the fire began when smoke emerged from the underside of a Mobicom vehicle while they were stopped to remove dried grass. KDDI noted that the group had obtained permission from border guards and was traveling in a convoy managed by local officials.
While the Mongolian government is considering claims for damages, former sumo grand champion Asashoryu (Dolgorsuren Dagvadorj) has expressed concerns regarding media coverage and perceived efforts to downplay the incident. He indicated intentions to visit the Japanese Prime Minister’s Official Residence to address the situation. The Japanese government has expressed condolences and indicated a willingness to assist in the recovery of the affected regions.
