Mongua community leader Ernesto Gómez assassinated

The municipality of Mongua, located in the Boyacá department, is on high alert following the violent death of community leader Ernesto Gómez. The incident occurred between the night of Saturday, September 6, and the morning of Sunday, September 7, 2026, in the Dinda rural district, specifically in the Duce sector.

Mayor Miguel Ángel Serrano confirmed the homicide, noting that Gómez operated a shop on the main road leading to the Circoasá district. While authorities are investigating the motive, it has not yet been determined if the crime was motivated by robbery or other circumstances. Additionally, the victim's wife is reported to be in delicate health.

In response to the event, the mayor has called for an extraordinary security council involving the National Police and the National Army. The administration aims to increase military presence in rural areas to compensate for the operational limitations of the police in conducting frequent patrols.
