MonitAnt project invites public to help monitor European forest ants

The MonitAnt international project is inviting the public to participate in a pan-European monitoring effort of forest ants from the Formica genus. Scientists from ten countries are working to map the distribution and population trends of these insects, which play a vital role in ecosystems by regulating insect populations, spreading seeds, and improving soil health.

Participants can act as citizen scientists by using their smartphones to photograph ant mounds and record GPS locations during walks or hikes. The data collected will help researchers understand how habitat fragmentation, climate change, and land management practices are affecting these populations. The project includes a public competition running until December 1, 2026, with prizes such as 3D ant models and formicariums available for contributors.
