Monk fruit emerges as a zero-calorie sugar alternative

Monk fruit, also known as Luo Han Guo, is a natural sweetener native to southern China and northern Thailand. It is gaining popularity as an alternative to sugar and stevia because it provides intense sweetness—estimated at 200 to 300 times that of sugar—without adding calories or impacting blood sugar levels.

The sweetness is derived from unique antioxidants called mogrosides rather than glucose or fructose. Because the body processes these compounds differently than sucrose, monk fruit does not cause the energy spikes associated with refined sugar, making it a common choice for individuals managing diabetes or low-carb diets.

Much of the world's production is concentrated in the mountains surrounding Guilin in the Guangxi region of China. While research has explored the potential antioxidant properties of mogrosides, current evidence remains early, and experts note that the sweetener should be viewed as a tool for reducing sugar intake rather than a replacement for a balanced diet.
