Monkeypox cases surge in Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula and Spain's Galicia in 2026

Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula recorded 37 confirmed monkeypox cases between January and July 2026, up from nine in the same period of 2025. Quintana Roo reported its 13th case, a 30‑year‑old male, while Yucatán contributed 24 cases and Campeche none. Nationwide, Mexico totals 76 cases across ten states, with the peninsula accounting for the highest regional share.

In Spain, the autonomous community of Galicia has logged 20 cases so far in 2026, nearly three times the total for the entire previous year. Four new infections were reported in the province of Pontevedra, three of them in Vigo, all in men under 30 and linked to high‑risk sexual activity. Two patients required hospitalization but have been discharged, and none had been previously vaccinated against monkeypox.
