Monmouthshire Council Advances ‘Nature Isn’t Neat’ Habitat Initiative

Councillor Mary Ann Brocklesby highlighted Monmouthshire’s “Nature Isn’t Neat” programme, a decade‑long effort to manage land more thoughtfully. The scheme, coordinated through the Green Grid Partnership of five local authorities, reduces unnecessary mowing and pesticide use, extends grass length where safe, and creates pollinator‑friendly habitats.

The approach includes targeted firebreaks for dry weather, cut‑and‑collect techniques that allow wildflowers to seed, and ongoing monitoring. An assessment of Abergavenny recently rated the area as having the best insect pathways in Britain, indicating the programme’s positive impact on wildlife corridors and biodiversity.

Brocklesby emphasized that the measures maintain safety for public spaces while enhancing ecological value, aiming to make Monmouthshire a model of sustainable countryside stewardship.
