Monmouthshire councillors call for tougher speed limit enforcement
Monmouthshire County Council is developing a draft road safety strategy aimed at reducing incidents involving deaths or serious injuries by at least 40 per cent over the next 14 years. This follows data showing 425 collisions, 559 casualties, and 177 people killed or seriously injured on the county’s roads between 2021 and 2024.
During a scrutiny committee meeting, councillors called for stricter speed limit enforcement and better collaboration with Gwent Police and the Go Safe speed camera partnership. The strategy identifies motorcyclists and young people aged 16–25 as priority groups due to their status as vulnerable road users.
Concerns were raised regarding the difficulty of policing unclassified roads and the effectiveness of current reporting methods. One councillor noted that residents have been told photographs are insufficient for prosecution and that video evidence is required, while another highlighted the danger of silent electric vehicles in narrow country lanes.
