Monmouthshire County Council targets 40% cut in serious road injuries

Monmouthshire County Council is developing a new Road Safety Strategy for the period 2026 to 2040. The initiative aims to reduce the number of vulnerable road users killed or seriously injured by at least 40% by 2040.

The strategy will focus on safer speeds, improved roads and streets, vehicle safety, and enhanced partnership working. It specifically targets the protection of pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, and young people aged 16 to 25.

Data shows that the number of people killed or seriously injured on Monmouthshire’s roads decreased from 63 in 2021 to 42 in 2024. The council plans to build on existing education programs, which have recently included pedestrian training for 800 children, cycle training for 300 pupils, and various school route assessments. A public consultation on the draft strategy will be launched via the Let’s Talk Monmouthshire platform.
