Monopoly board game history and mechanics
Monopoly is one of the world's most famous social board games, centered on purchasing real estate, building houses and hotels, and managing finances to drive opponents into bankruptcy. The game involves a combination of negotiation, trading, risk assessment, and luck.
The origins of the game date back to the early 20th century with ‘The Landlord’s Game’, created by American Lizzie Magie to demonstrate the economic consequences of land concentration and monopolies. In the 1930s, Charles Darrow developed his own version, which was later officially published by Parker Brothers in 1935, leading to its global expansion.
