Monpura fishermen auction large catfish and Hilsa

In the Monpura sub-district of Bhola, significant large fish have recently been caught in the Meghna River and sold at high prices during local auctions.

A 16 kg catfish was caught by fisherman Kamal Majhi and subsequently sold at an auction for 24,000 BDT. The fish was purchased by a trader and is expected to be transported to Karwan Bazar in Dhaka for further sale.

Additionally, a ‘Raja Hilsa’ weighing approximately two kg was caught by fisherman Kiran Majhi. This Hilsa was auctioned for 8,500 BDT. Local traders noted that while it is currently the peak season, large Hilsa are becoming rare, and the catch created a festive atmosphere at the Ramnewaj fish market.

Local fisheries officials noted that while there is currently a shortage of Hilsa, the appearance of large fish is a positive sign for the local fishing community.
