Mexico faces budget chaos if ISSSTE law repeal enacted, warns legislator Monreal

Ricardo Monreal, the Morena parliamentary leader in Mexico’s Chamber of Deputies, warned that repealing the 2007 reform of the ISSSTE law – a demand of the teachers’ union CNTE – would plunge the country into chaos. He said the measure would be “economically and budgetarily impossible,” leaving the government unable to pay police, doctors, nurses, or to maintain public infrastructure. Monreal cited explanations from President Claudia Sheinbaum, ISSSTE director Martí Batres and Education Secretary Mario Delgado, all confirming the fiscal infeasibility.

He urged lawmakers to back the president and maintain unity amid the challenges surrounding the 2026 World Cup, emphasizing that the administration has avoided repression and ensured a secure environment for the event.
