Monreale Cathedral showcases diverse architectural influences in Sicily

The Monreale Cathedral in north-western Sicily is a UNESCO World Heritage site noted for its unique architectural fusion. Built in 1174 by Norman King William II, the cathedral was dedicated to Santa Maria la Nuova following the discovery of treasure near Palermo.

The structure reflects the diverse historical influences of Sicily, incorporating Roman columns adorned with Greek goddess heads, Islamic star motifs on the ceiling, and geometric jasper and porphyry floors. Most notably, the interior is covered in approximately 100 million pieces of Byzantine-style gold mosaics, creating a shimmering effect throughout the church.
