Monsoon flooding triggers crisis in India and disease epidemic in Philippines

Severe monsoon weather has triggered widespread flooding and health crises across Asia. In Bihar, India, over 43 lakh people across 14 districts have been affected as the Ganga, Gandak, and Kosi rivers have crossed danger levels. Heavy rainfall in both Bihar and the catchment areas of Nepal has caused significant swelling in major river systems. The state government has deployed relief measures, including 951 community kitchens, 15 relief camps, and nearly 2,000 boats for evacuation.

In the Philippines, relentless monsoon rains have led to a leptospirosis epidemic in areas such as Manila and Quezon City. The infection, transmitted through contact with water contaminated by the urine of infected animals, has seen a surge in cases. The Department of Health reported 6,253 cases and 378 deaths nationwide between January and late August. Health officials warn that the bacteria can survive in contaminated soil and water for extended periods, posing a significant risk during the monsoon season.
