Monsoon rains trigger dam gate openings and impact river flood risks

Heavy rainfall in the Tikamgarh region has led to rising water levels in the Ban Sujara Dam. Following the opening of two gates on Monday, a third gate is being opened on Tuesday to manage the inflow. Authorities are discharging approximately 198 cubic meters of water per second and have increased monitoring in low-lying areas to ensure public safety.

In a different regional development, the threat of flooding in the Chambal River has diminished due to lower rainfall in its catchment areas. This reduction in flood risk is expected to significantly benefit the survival rate of gharial hatchlings. While natural survival rates for these young reptiles are typically only 1-2%, experts anticipate survival rates could reach up to 70% this season due to calmer river conditions.
