India’s south‑west monsoon reaches Mumbai and Delhi, bringing rain and cooler temperatures

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on 23 June that the south‑west monsoon has moved into Mumbai, marking the official start of the season in the city. The department said the monsoon has also spread to other parts of Maharashtra, Telangana, Odisha and to portions of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar, with further expansion expected over the next few days.

In Delhi‑NCR, IMD issued an alert for strong winds and scattered showers on 24 June. Wind gusts reached up to 91 km/h in parts of the region, and temperatures fell sharply, providing temporary relief from the preceding heat wave. Authorities warned residents to avoid open areas and vulnerable structures during the gusty conditions.

The agency continues to monitor the monsoon’s progression across northern and central India, expecting it to reach additional states in the coming days.
