Mont Blanc altitude measured at 4,807.47 meters

New measurements conducted in September 2026 by surveying experts from Haute-Savoie reveal that Mont Blanc, Western Europe's highest peak, has an altitude of 4,807.47 meters. This represents an increase of 1.88 meters compared to the 2023 measurement of 4,805.59 meters.

Experts emphasize that this change does not indicate the rocky base of the mountain is growing. The mountain's solid rock peak remains relatively stable at approximately 4,792 meters. The fluctuations in recorded altitude are due to variations in the thickness of the snow and ice cap covering the summit, which are influenced by wind, precipitation, temperature, and seasonal weather conditions.

Jean des Garets, president of the Chamber of Surveyors in Haute-Savoie, noted that the summit is in "constant motion" and that individual measurements are less significant than long-term data trends. Glaciologist Luc Moreau stated that the summit currently remains cold and has not yet been significantly modified by climate change. The surveying group, which has conducted periodic measurements since 2001, utilized satellite positioning, drones, and ground-penetrating radar to create a 3D model of the ice and snow cover.
