Alpine regions implement new regulations to combat overtourism

Authorities in the Alps are implementing new measures to combat overtourism and manage increasing visitor numbers. In France, administrators of the Tour du Mont-Blanc (TMB) are preparing regulations for spring 2027. These measures include mandatory reservations for overnight stays, a ban on wild camping, and the creation of a dedicated squad to monitor trail compliance. The TMB, which spans France, Italy, and Switzerland, saw visitor numbers rise from 60,000 in 2022 to approximately 90,000 this summer, leading to saturated refuges and unauthorized camping on private land.

In Switzerland, the Lac de Taney has successfully implemented vehicle restrictions to manage crowds. Since 2025, visitors must park in Vouvry and use a bus to reach the trail, a move that has satisfied local residents and restaurateurs by reducing illegal parking. Authorities are now considering shuttle services for people with reduced mobility and stricter enforcement against wild camping.

The French regulations have sparked debate in Italy’s Valle d’Aosta. While the TMB is a vital economic resource, local leaders like the Mayor of Courmayeur are discussing the distinction between healthy growth and the negative impacts of overtourism.
