Mont Blanc refuges closed due to rockfall risks and heat

Authorities in Saint-Gervais-les-Bains have issued warnings against climbing Mont Blanc due to extreme heat and drought, which have significantly increased the risk of rockfalls. The municipality has ordered the closure of the Tête Rousse and Goûter mountain refuges to protect hikers from lethal falling debris, particularly in the dangerous Grand Couloir du Goûter section.

The decision follows recent fatalities, including two climbers killed in July. In response to the unstable conditions, mountain guide associations in both France and Italy have suspended guided ascents. Mayor Jean-Marc Peillex has urged climbers to reconsider their plans, noting that the current environmental conditions dictate the safety of the mountain.

Beyond immediate safety concerns, the region is facing debates regarding high volumes of tourism. With approximately 80,000 people undertaking the Mont Blanc tour annually across France, Italy, and Switzerland, local officials have discussed potential access restrictions and reservation requirements to manage overcrowding and environmental impact.
