Mont Blanc massif faces instability as heat melts ice tunnel
Extreme heat and rising temperatures in the Mont Blanc massif have led to significant geological instability. In the French Alps, the famous ice tunnel at Aiguille du Midi, located at an altitude of 3,842 meters, had to be completely dismantled after showing signs of melting and structural instability. Water infiltration and cracks in the ice increased the risk of collapse.
In addition to the tunnel's removal, authorities have closed two important mountain refuges on the normal route to Mont Blanc due to the heightened risk of rockfalls. Experts note that the multiplication of rockfall episodes follows weeks of heat and drought, which contribute to the degradation of permafrost.
While specific scientific analysis is required to link individual collapses directly to climate change, experts warn that warming modifies the physical conditions of high-altitude zones, destabilizing rocks and terrain. The situation highlights a growing need for improved monitoring systems, risk mapping, and cross-border cooperation to manage natural hazards in mountain territories.
