Mont Blanc rockfalls cause climber death and shelter closures

Increased rockfall activity on Mont Blanc in the Haute-Savoie region has led to the death of an alpinist and the closure of key mountain shelters. The fatal incident occurred near the Aiguille du Génépi, close to the Albert 1er refuge, where a climber was struck by falling stones.

In the Gouter Corridor, a heavily used climbing route, video footage captured intense rockfalls that caused panic among climbers. Authorities have attributed the increased frequency of these events to high temperatures and drought, which are causing frozen ground to thaw and destabilize the slopes.

As a safety precaution, the Mayor of Saint-Gervais-les-Bains has ordered the closure of the Tete Rousse and Gouter shelters. Professional mountain guides have also suspended climbs due to the high risk. Following recent incidents, some climbers required helicopter evacuations from the area.
