Mont Blanc rescue dispute: Mayor clashes with Alpine Club

A helicopter rescue operation on Mont Blanc has sparked a dispute between local authorities and the French Alpine Club (FFCAM). Following a massive rockfall on August 11, the Mayor of Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, Jean-Marc Peillex, ordered the closure of the Tête-Rousse and Goûter huts.

As a result, 32 climbers were stranded at the Goûter Hut. While the climbers did not violate the closure order itself, reports indicate they had previously ignored warnings from mountain guide associations and the Office de Haute Montagne. The climbers are now expected to cover the costs of their helicopter evacuation personally.

The incident has led to public friction, with Mayor Peillex criticizing the FFCAM president, Van der Elst, for a lack of understanding regarding hut operations and communication with hut keepers.
