Mont-Saint-Michel serves as a landmark for coastal hiking and spiritual journeys
The GR34, also known as the Sentier des douaniers, is a coastal hiking trail spanning approximately 2,000 kilometers along the Breton coastline between Mont-Saint-Michel and Saint-Nazaire. The route features diverse landscapes including cliffs, beaches, ports, and moors. A full crossing is estimated to take between 90 and 100 days at a pace of 20 kilometers per day.
In a related journey of spiritual significance, Bertrand Leroy, founder of the Compagnons du Sentier, undertook a 100-day expedition to connect Mont-Saint-Michel to the island of Symi, Greece. The journey, which included both walking and sailing, covered 3,000 nautical miles to deliver a letter entrusted to him by the Bishop of Avranches and Coutances.
