Montague considers bulk electricity purchasing to stabilize rates

Town leaders in Montague, Massachusetts, are considering a municipal aggregation program known as Montague Power Choice to stabilize electricity costs for residents and businesses. The initiative aims to use the community’s collective buying power to secure longer-term electricity supply pricing, thereby reducing the volatility associated with utility default supply rates.

If approved, participating customers would see a change only in the supply portion of their Eversource bills; the delivery service and billing processes would remain unchanged. Officials have clarified that the primary goal is to achieve more predictable pricing rather than guaranteeing rates lower than Eversource’s Basic Service.

To proceed, the town must submit an Aggregation Plan to state regulators. A public comment period for the draft plan is currently open through September 16.
