Montana Auditor Suspends Bail Bondsman Laine Callahan

State Auditor James Brown, head of Montana’s Office of the Commissioner of Securities and Insurance, suspended the insurance producer license of Kalispell bail bondsman Laine Kendall Callahan. The suspension follows an investigation that found evidence Callahan traded bail‑bond services for sexual favors, coerced a witness into oral sex to “work off” a debt, and forced another individual to perform unlicensed bail‑agent work in exchange for kickbacks. The probe also revealed that Callahan routinely took vehicle titles as collateral without proper documentation and mixed client funds with personal accounts.

Callahan issued 133 bonds worth more than $1 million in a four‑month period ending March 2026, and the auditor said the practices pose a substantial and ongoing risk to the public. Brown indicated a permanent revocation may be pursued. Callahan has disputed the allegations and has not commented on whether he will contest the suspension.
