Montana man kills eight family members during Sunday dinner

A 44-year-old man, identified as Alan Michael Smith, allegedly killed eight family members during a Sunday dinner at a home outside Billings, Montana, before setting the residence on fire and taking his own life.

The victims included four generations of a family: Smith’s parents, Dana Smith (73) and Barbara Smith (72); his sister, Megan Ireland-Ghekiere (39); his grandmother, Evelyn Smith (92); and four children aged 7, 12, 13, and 15.

Authorities in Yellowstone County indicate the motive may have been related to a dispute regarding Smith living in his parents' home. Following the shooting, Smith reportedly attempted to flee before being confronted by police. The incident, which involved a significant number of casualties within a single household, has caused widespread shock in the local community.
