Montana mass shooting kills eight family members

Eight family members were killed during a mass shooting near Billings, Montana, on Sunday evening. Authorities identified the suspect as 44-year-old Alan Michael Smith, who was found dead following the attack.

The victims included homeowners Dana Smith, 73, and Barbara Smith, 72; their daughter Megan Ireland-Ghekiere, 39; Evelyn Smith, 92; and four children: Owen Ireland, 13; Chloe Ireland, 7; Landon Ghekiere, 15; and Charlotte Ghekiere, 12.

Investigators noted that the shooting occurred at a home where the family had gathered for dinner. Reports indicate that Smith had lived with his parents for several years and had been asked to move out a few weeks prior to the incident.

A 12-year-old girl, Charlotte Ghekiere, has been described by neighbors as a hero for her efforts to call 911 and attempt to save her family members during the violence.
