Montargis municipal election victory annulled by French court

The Orléans Administrative Tribunal has annulled the victory of the Rassemblement National (RN) in the municipal elections of Montargis. The court ruled that the integrity of the vote was compromised by the dissemination of a defamatory video shortly before the second round of voting.

In the March elections, RN candidate Côme Dunis won the seat by a narrow margin of 59 votes, securing 34.64% of the vote. He defeated communist candidate Bruno Nottin, who received 33.10%, and incumbent mayor Benoît Digeon, who received 32.26%.

The tribunal found that a video accusing Nottin of forgery in public documents was widely circulated on social media, specifically noting that the content was widely distributed by Dunis himself. The court characterized these actions as having a defamatory nature that could have altered the election results.

Following his victory, Dunis resigned from the mayoralty in early August for medical reasons, leaving Dominique Coquelle in the position. The RN has indicated it intends to contest the court's decision.
