Monte Erice racing tragedy: driver tests negative for substances

Investigators are continuing their inquiry into the fatal accident during the 68th Monte Erice Hillclimb, where a Peugeot 308 TCR driven by Marco Nicoletti veered off course, killing two spectators, Giuseppe Bisconti (18) and Karol Greco (20). A race official, Mario Marchese, was also seriously injured.

Toxicology tests for Nicoletti returned negative results, ruling out substance use at the time of the race and leading to the return of his driver's license. Nicoletti has been placed under investigation for road homicide to allow for technical assessments. The vehicle has been seized for inspection of its braking, steering, and suspension systems.

To assist in reconstructing the accident, Nicoletti has handed over footage from his car's camera to the Trapani Prosecutor's Office. This will be analyzed alongside spectator mobile phone footage to determine the vehicle's trajectory and whether a mechanical failure occurred. Preliminary findings indicate there were no signs of braking on the road before the car struck a barrier and launched approximately 60 meters.
