Monte Hermoso conducts massive beach cleanup after severe storm surges
Monte Hermoso is undergoing extensive cleanup and damage assessment following severe coastal flooding caused by cyclogenesis. More than 200 volunteers participated in a massive ecological effort to clean over 15 kilometers of coastline, removing 2,920 kilograms of inorganic waste and 1,140 kilograms of heavy debris, such as wood and metal sheets, swept in by the storm.
The municipal government, through the Secretariat of Public Works, is prioritizing the restoration of beach access and coastal infrastructure. This event marks the second major storm surge in less than six months, leaving the city with limited time for natural recovery.
To address long-term coastal defense, the municipality is conducting technical studies in collaboration with the Universidad Nacional del Sur (UNS), Conicet, and the Instituto Argentino de Oceanografía (IADO). These studies aim to determine the most effective protection strategies for the city's 32 kilometers of coastline, particularly the vulnerable 600-meter central urban sector.
