Monte Mabu designated as Community Conservation Area in Mozambique
The Monte Mabu area in Mozambique's Zambézia province has been formally recognized as a Community Conservation Area. Spanning 9,341 hectares, the area was established via Ministerial Diploma No. 69/2026 to protect unique species, water sources, and local livelihoods through participatory management.
The formalization was supported by the EU-funded PROMOVE Biodiversidade program, which integrated scientific research with community organization to facilitate the legal recognition process. During a ceremony in Lugela, State Secretary for Land and Environment Gustavo Sobrinho Djedje emphasized that the state will manage these areas through mechanisms that allow for the participation of both public and community entities to ensure landscape restoration and preservation.
